When you need to know how to do something, a manual is the best place to start. 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus might be called the Teacher's Manual, because so much of what they contain is about the kind of teaching that Christian leaders should--and shouldn't--be giving. Just as Timothy and Titus needed help to lead their young churches well in the midst of powerful cultural forces, we need guidance for correct leading and living in our own context. These studies on Paul's letters point us in the right direction.

Esther's obedience led to the preservation of her people at a moment in history when all seemed lost.

We all pray . . . some.We pray to stay sober, centered, or solvent. When the lump is deemed malignant. When the money runs out before the month does. When the marriage is falling apart. We pray. But wouldn't we like to pray more? Better? Stronger? With more fire, faith, and fervency?Yet we have kids to feed, bills to pay, deadlines to meet. The calendar pounces on our good intentions like a tiger on a rabbit. And what about our checkered history with prayer? Uncertain words. Unmet expectations. Unanswered requests. We aren't the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only tutorial they ever requested. And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn't we use the same?In Before Amen best-selling author Max Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin

Come on home to healing for your soul. Every year near the first day of spring, the cliff swallows come back from their winter retreat in Argentina to return home to San Juan Capistrano in Southern California. Recently as I was thinking about this phenomenon of nature, I realized that deep down inside each of us there is also a similar homing instinct. Whether we realize it or not, we all yearn to come home to God. Thats what Saint Augustine was talking about when he wrote what has become his most famous quote: Our heart is restless until it finds its rest in Thee. That is what the cross does for us. It brings us home to God. There is an empty spot in our hearts and lives that only God can fill. God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself. God was on the cross bringing us HOME, and that is precisely where we are all meant to be! JAMES W. MOORE This Book Includes a Discussion Guide.

God's grace comes to us in the distinctive shape of our personal histories, needs, and possibilities, Indermark writes. Yet divine grace also reveals the depths of what we share across all boundaries of time and place.

Book Study
Explores what Christians believe, why they believe, and why it matters through the Apostles Creed. We're all searching. Sometimes the search is easy: simply type a question and the answer pops up. But sometimes our questions are complicated, and the answers are difficult to see and harder to articulate. How do we discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life? Adam Hamilton believes that some powerful answers are contained in the Apostles' Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs. In this book, Hamilton considers important questions of life, reality, and truth. He explores not only what Christians believe, but also why they believe it and why it matters.

Your journey may not be as dramatic, but it can have a life-changing impact for someone standing a few steps away from youand for you as well, as you learn the power of extending care, compassion, and inclusiveness under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

How can we live more authentic lives?
I confess that I am an unreconstructed optimist. Not a naive one; Ive lived too long for that, long enough to have experienced a resounding case for pessimism. I have vivid memories of the Great Depression, and Ive lived through several wars and those international anomalies that we call police actions. Ive watched what has seemed to me to be a rather steady decline in both public and private morals, and a growing confusion about ethics. And of course, Ive watched the increasing prevalence of both evil and inanity (sometimes theyre synonymous) in television and on the Internet. from the Introduction But: There is God. And because there is God, there is goodness. I profoundly believe that God is at work in our world and that our planet has not yet been written off as a lost cause. History seems to tell me that though our human race appears so often to dedicate itself to its own destruction, God is always at work, usually, I think, behind the scenes. And because of God, faith, love, and goodness keep being reborn. So I write about Life from the Up Side.
The Jewish believers were torn between their new faith in Jesus and their old ways rooted in Old Testament routines and rituals. They were tempted to go back to their familiar life that seemed good enough. But the author of Hebrews shows that when Jesus came, the best got better.
Do your Monday actions reflect your Sunday worship? How about your claims to faith? Is your life full of noticeable changes and actions?
James, the half-brother of Jesus, wasn't impressed with talk. He knew that a life of faith was all about actions that revealed a difference in a person's life. For him, it was not that works save the Christian, but that they mark the Christian. In his letter, he boldly deals with practical issues of faith not bound by culture or place. He shows the importance of living a genuine life of faith. His message is bare-knuckled as he encourages, challenges, and confronts, offering practical words and admonitions to live out our faith.
John had been there. With Jesus when he went among the people and loved them. And John could still hear the words: I am the light of the world...I am the door...I am the way, the truth, the life... So, when John wrote his account of Jesus' life, he wrote so that others may believe and have life in Jesus' name.

Denominations from evangelical to mainline continue to experience deep divisions over universal social issues. The underlying debate isn't about a particular social issue, but instead it is about how we understand the nature of scripture and how we should interpret it. The world's bestselling, most-read, and most-loved book is also one of the most confusing. In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton, one of the country's leading pastors and Christian authors, addresses the hot-button issues that plague the church and cultural debate, and answers many of the questions frequently asked by Christians and non-Christians alike.
Join Adam Hamilton as he travels from Egypt to Mt. Sinai, the Nile, the Red Sea and the wilderness exploring the sites of Moses' life. Using historical information, archaeological data, and biblical text, Hamilton guides us in the footsteps of this reluctant prophet who grew in his relationship with God and by the end of life had successfully fulfilled the role he was given.
Is it possible to disagree politically and love unconditionally? The reaction of evangelicals to political and cultural shifts in recent years revealed what they value most. Lurking beneath our Bible-laced rhetoric, faith claims, books, and sermons is a relentless drive to WIN!
Using an approach similar to that in his book Parables from the Back Side, popular author J. Throughout history people have walked the ancient archetypal spirals of labyrinths as a spiritual practice. Walking the path into the center of the labyrinth is a metaphor for finding one's own center or finding God. Walking out of the labyrinth is a symbol of being reborn into the world. Carole Ann Camp's insightful, meditative book deepens our understanding of this process and gives us practical guidance. With Bible readings, prayers, and stories from the author's many years of experience with the power of the labyrinth, Praying at Every Turn supports us as we take this journey of faith.

Renovating a house can be an exciting and rewarding experience. But the act of renovation can often leave the house in a state of disarray, causing stress and frustration. It's not going to be easy, and your life might experience some disarray, but renovating with God is the opportunity of a lifetime.

The men depicted in the Bible were not perfect by any means. We find story after story marked by scandal, failure, and intrigue. Yet we also find many stories of men who were able to look beyond their circumstances, completely trust in the Lord, and follow Him wherever He chose to them. Like us, these men made both good and bad decisions along the wayand experienced both good and bad consequencesand we find our struggles and hopes in the pages of the Bible that tells their stories.

The beatitudes reveal to us eight qualities that bring God's blessing: meekness and mercy, poorness in spirit and purity of heart, mourning and hunger, peacemaking and persecution. As we study these qualities and integrate them into our lives, we will receive the blessing Jesus promised to his followers then and now.

Are you putting your whole faith in God but still living as if everything is up to you?
Jesus provided his disciples teachings for how to follow Torah, Gods word; he told them parables to help them discern questions of ethics and of human nature; he offered them beatitudes for comfort and encouragement. But sometimes Jesus spoke words that followers then and now have found difficult. He instructs disciples to hate members of their own families (Luke 14:26), to act as if they were slaves (Matthew 20:27), and to sell their belongings and give to the poor (Luke 18:22). He restricts his mission (Matthew 10:6); he speaks of damnation (Matthew 8:12); he calls Jews the devils children (John 8:44).

If First Corinthians was a show, it might be slotted into the daytime melodrama genre. This letter has it all: fighting, sex, jealousy, divorce, money, and death. Like many of the apostles works, First Corinthians reminds us how dysfunctional the early church was. Two thousand years on, the churchs warts show no sign of fading. In some ways, thats good news. If Paul held out hope for this stunted community, Gods people today are in no less position to receive his transforming and sanctifying grace.

Our culture seems to be busier and more technologically connected than in any time in history, and this requires more intentionality to stay in relationship with God and cultivate deeper relationships with others. For over 2,000 years, the church has looked to the apostle Paul and his letters in order to understand and follow the Christian life. Without a hint of exaggeration, says Bill Hybels, the ability to discern divine direction has saved me from a life of sure boredom and self-destruction. Gods well-timed words have redirected my path, rescued me from temptation and re-energized me during some of my deepest moments of despair. In The Power of a Whisper, vision is cast for what life can look like when Gods followers choose to hear from heaven as they navigate life on earth. In THE PRODIGAL GOD, New York pastor Timothy Keller uses the story of the prodigal son to shine a light on the central, beautiful message of Jesus: the gospel of grace, hope and salvation.Keller argues that the parable of the prodigal son, while Jesus best-known parable, is also his least understood. He introduces the reader to all the characters in this timeless story, showing that it concerns not just a wayward son, but also a judgemental older brother and, most importantly, a loving father. This short but powerful book is a reminder to the faithful, an explanation to the seeker, and finally an invitation to all both older and younger brothers to enter in to the unique, radical nature of the gospel: the reckless, spendthrift love of God.

For over two decades Too Busy Not to Pray has stood as a classic on prayer, helping Christians all over the world slow down to draw near to God. During those years, the world certainly hasn't slowed down. If anything, the pace, intensity and number of distractions have only increased. Brokenness and pain seem to have increased as well, with news of civil war, poverty, broken families and sex-trafficking touching us daily. The urgent need for prayer is clear, but busyness still keeps many of us from finding time to pray. Two truths haven't changed in all these years: God is the same powerful, just, holy God he's always been; and true prayer?prayer that changes us and allows us to participate in God's work in the world?can't happen on the fly. So Bill Hybels once again offers us his practical, time-tested ideas on slowing down to pray. Revised throughout and including a new introduction and new chapter on prayer and compassion for the world, this twentieth-anniversary edition of Too Busy Not to Pray calls both young and old to make prayer a priority, and broadens our vision for what our eternal, powerful God does when his people slow down to pray

A labyrinth is a pattern consisting of a single circuitous path that winds into the centre, with no possibility of getting lost, as in a maze, and no dead ends. It is one of the most ancient tools for spiritual growth and development, dating back to medieval Christianity, and is currently enjoying a popular revival, especially in contemporary 'Fresh Expressions' of church. As an effective focus for prayer and worship, labyrinths - temporary and permanent - are increasingly found in traditional and alternative church communities and at festivals like Greenbelt. This book provides a complete guide for beginner and seasoned labyrinth explorer alike.

The book encourages spiritual growth and self-discovery, providing insights into the relationship with Jesus and the significance of being a chosen individual.

Jesus saw these commandments not as onerous burdens, but as guideposts to help us experience a good and beautiful life. These ten ancient words were given to us by a loving God who longed to set safe boundaries, create order out of chaos, help communities live peacefully, and protect us--often from ourselves.
